This position is assigned to Band X: Nurse Practitioners (NP) often work independently or semi-independently, making clinical decisions on their own, sometimes in high-stakes or emergency situations. NP’s must balance multiple factors, using critical thinking skills, when making decisions and forming diagnoses and courses of treatment. Complexity of work: The work of a Nurse Practitioner (NP) includes a combination of clinical, patient care, and decision-making. Performs assessments and makes diagnosis based on assessments and diagnostic testing; creates complex treatment plans. Education: BSN – MSN or DNP from an accredited institution Preferred Experience(s): 2 years’ experience in specialty area (Psych, General, etc.) License(s): Current State of Alaska Advanced Nurse Practitioner RN License and an active DEA license or ability to apply for such license prior to or upon hire. Certifications – AHA BLS Position Summary: The Nurse Practitioner (NP) is an advanced practice registered nurse (RN) responsible for providing high-quality, patient-centered care in a various healthcare setting. Working autonomously or collaboratively with physicians and other healthcare professionals, the NP assesses, diagnoses, and manages acute and chronic illnesses, injuries and medical conditions. Psychiatric-Mental Health Nurse Practitioner primarily for our inpatient Mental Health Unit. The successful candidate is someone who demonstrates a high degree of clinical expertise in working with patients with acute needs in an inpatient setting. They will be responsible for assessment, diagnosis, treatment, management, education, and care coordination for patients with acute and chronic behavioral health needs. Patient Assessment and Diagnosis – Conduct thorough physical and psychological examinations and obtain thorough patient medical histories. – Perform, order, and interpret diagnostic testing such as lab work, radiology/imaging studies, EKGs, etc. – Formulate differential diagnoses and provide accurate diagnoses based on clinical assessment. – Write specific orders within the limits of the practice agreement/scope of practice. – Treatment Planning and Implementation – Provide acute care for patients with mental health issues while admitted to our inpatient mental health unit. May provide long-term care for patients with behavioral health issues in our outpatient setting. – Develop individual care plans for patients, including treatment strategies for both acute and chronic conditions. – Prescribe medications, therapies, and interventions by following hospital policy and procedures, and state and federal guidelines in order to meet the patient’s needs. – Perform advanced medical procedures such as wound care, suturing, etc.) within the NP’s scope of practice. Patient Management and Monitoring – Works closely with psychiatrist to manage psychopharmacology and coordinate multidisciplinary services. – Serves as psychiatric consultant to other hospital departments including the emergency department. – Monitor patient progress, adjust treatment plans as necessary based on response to care. – Provide ongoing management of patients with chronic or complex conditions, often coordinating care across multiple areas/specialties. – Respond to Rapid Response or other emergency / urgent medical needs, when appropriate. Collaborative Care and Teamwork – Work closely with physicians, surgeons, specialists, nurses, and other healthcare professionals to coordinate patient care. – Participate in interdisciplinary rounds, participating and contributing to the discussions on patient treatment, discharge planning and continuity of care. – Provide appropriate directions to unit staff regarding patient care issues. – Participates in education of students and other health care professionals. – Works with administrative, nursing, and physician staff to assure safe, effective, quality patient care and to promote Bartlett Regional Hospital’s CARE values Patient Education and Support – Educate patients and families about mental health including medications, risks, benefits and expectations. – Educate patients and their families or support system about diagnoses, treatment options, procedures, and preventive care. – Provide counseling on lifestyle modifications, medication options and adherence, and disease management to promote optimal health outcomes. Discharge Planning and Follow Up Care – Assist in preparing patients for discharge by providing necessary instructions and ensuring that they have appropriate follow up care. – Coordinate with outpatient providers, specialists, and home health services. Administrative and Documentation Responsibilities – Maintain detailed and accurate patient records, documenting assessments, diagnoses treatments, and patient progress. – Ensure compliance with hospital policies, legal requirements, and ethical standards in record keeping and patient care. Other duties as assigned – Other duties as assigned. – Participate in hospital committees, quality improvement initiatives, and other tasks as needed. – Regulatory compliance – stay updated with hospital policies, federal, and state regulations. – Welcomes and participates in opportunities to advance the mission of Bartlett Mental Health Unit and Behavioral Health services.
